Murder trial opens in fatal shooting of Riverside police officer

The murder trial begins Monday morning for Earl Ellis Green, the parolee accused of the brutal murder of a Riverside police officer in 2010.

Green, 46, has been charged with shooting Officer Ryan P. Bonaminio on the night of Nov. 7 after the officer pursued Green as he drove an allegedly stolen semi-truck believed to have been involved in a hit-and-run collision, prosecutors said.

Investigators said Green jumped out of the truck and ran into Riverside’s vast Fairmount Park. When Bonaminio slipped on the wet grass while chasing him on foot, Green hit the officer with a pipe and then shot him point-blank, possibly with the officer’s own gun, prosecutors said.

Green’s criminal record spans two decades and included several convictions for spousal abuse and car theft, as well as drug dealing and battery of a police officer, according to prosecutors.

Green faces the death penalty if convicted. Opening statements for his murder trial are scheduled for 9 a.m. before Judge Jean Pfeiffer Leonard in Riverside.
